Last Tuesday, on August 29, we had the pleasure to attend #Freestyle50 Cypher, an emcee battle featuring the national finalists of the #Freestyle50 cypher challenge at Playhouse Hollywood in Los Angeles. Presented by Verizon, 300 Entertainment CEO Kevin Liles and producer London On Da Track, the exclusive, invite-only event featured performances by rap superstar Redman and artists Tee Grizzley, OMB Peezy and Cyhi the Prynce. Now in its second year, the #Freestyle50 challenge was inspired by Verizon's 8GB for $50 prepaid offer available exclusively at Walmart.
Music lovers, industry heads, journalists and rap fans alike gathered to watch as eight talented MC's from around the country were single handedly chosen as finalists from over 9,000 dreamers who participated in the #freestle50challenge held via social media. With music by DJ Amen, DJ Carisma and DJ Dre Sinatra, everyone in the crowd was ready to hear the best of the best battle it out for the top spot.
The #Freestyle50 finale event was hosted by Sway Calloway and Smack White, founder of the Smack URL battle rap series and featured each MC finalist spitting their best freestyles in one-on-one battles with judges including radio legend Big Boy, Spotify's Global Programming Head of Hip Hop Tuma Basa and Real 92.3's DJ A-Oh.
The evening champion, Chicago's Y.K Supe, rocked the stage and took home the grand prize of $10,000, a beat produced by London on Da Track and an opening act slot on the upcoming 300 Artist Development Tour + endless opportunities.
"I had a feeling I was going to win...I felt like it was Gods plan. [My] Immediate thought was "thank you god."
"Something I learned about myself was that I do well under pressure and that if I keep faith and continue to give God the glory, everything is going to workout during my journey in reaching my dream cuz he already blessed me with talent and the work ethic." Shared Supe with LA Pulse Mag upon winning.
If you made it down to Austin, Texas, back in March for SXSW, you may have had the opportunity to jumped on the Y.K Supe wave early, as he performed during the festival prior to winning the #freestle50challenge. If this is the first time hearing of Y.K Supe, we encourage you to go back and listen and support his music. This is just the beginning for our newest friend.
The night ended with surprise guest performances from Tee Grizzley and the OG, Redman. There were so many key industry heads in the house that night, everyone came out a winner. Don't be afraid to dream aloud, you'll never know who's watching.
